ATHLETIC ACADEMIC COORDINATOR
 
Northwestern State University (NSU) is currently accepting applications for the position of Athletic Academic Advisor. Northwestern State, a member of NCAA Division I (FCS), sponsors 14 sports and competes as a member of the Southland Conference.
 
The Athletic Academic Advisor will work along with and be overseen by the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. Advisors will have specific sport oversight and together will advise over 350 student-athletes. As outlined in the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program grant responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing and monitor the academic progress of at-risk student-athletes
  • Advising and counseling student-athletes
  • Overseeing NCAA Academic Progress Rate for specific sports
  • Facilitating initial, transfer, and continuing eligibility certification
  • Coordinating registration/scheduling/issues with other university academic units
  • Working with Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance to maintain compliance with NCAA, Southland Conference, and university regulations
  • Assisting with recruiting visits, guest coaching program, and other various administrative duties
  • Assisting student-athletes with NCAA Clearinghouse and NSU Admissions requirements
  • Serving as the primary liaison for the Grades First academic assistance software
  • Assisting with events in the Victorious for Life Program, NSU’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program
 Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred; Ideal areas of study: Sports Administration, Higher and Continuing Education, Student-Development, or Counseling
  • Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in Division I athletics
  • Should possess a strong interest in the academic, personal, and career development  of NSU student-athletes as well as a sensitivity to their social and educational needs
  • Should be able to exhibit the capability to motivate and encourage those student-athletes who are academically under-prepared and considered to be at-risk of losing eligibility and good academic standing
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations regarding initial and continuing eligibility
  • Computer literacy is mandatory with experience working with Office
    • Previous experience with Banner and GradesFirst a plus
  • Should be willing to work nights and weekends as needed
