LAKE CHARLES — Northwestern State tennis hits the road this weekend for a pair of key Southland Conference matchups, traveling to McNeese on Saturday at 1 p.m. before heading to Southeastern on Monday for an 11 a.m. start.

The Lady Demons (8-4, 4-0) enter the weekend with momentum after a strong home stand, defeating New Orleans 4–3 and Nicholls 6–1.

Despite the undefeated start in conference play, head coach Marcos Morelli emphasized the importance of staying grounded.

"It is still early in the season," Morelli said. "We've started well, but anything can happen. We need to focus on ourselves and take care of the little details."

Against New Orleans, NSU secured the doubles point and relied on timely singles performances, with Sofi Garcia clinching the match for the second consecutive contest. Martina Acebedo Bonocore and Athina Grigoriadou continued their strong play, each earning key singles victories as the Lady Demons held off a late push from the Privateers.

Two days later, NSU delivered one of its most complete performances of the season in a 6–1 win over Nicholls.

The Lady Demons swept doubles play and controlled the singles lineup, with wins from Lolita Hukasian, Garcia, Grigoriadou, Maria Farina and Acebedo Bonocore.

Morelli credited the team's balance across the lineup for its early success.

"Every player on the team is contributing in their own way," Morelli said. "Everyone is locked in."

That depth will be tested this weekend against two of the conference's top teams.

Saturday's matchup at McNeese (12-1, 2-0) presents one of the toughest challenges in the Southland. The Cowgirls enter the match riding a seven-match winning streak. As a team, McNeese holds a dominant 55–12 combined score this season in its matches.

Individually, Ana Hollweg has been one of the conference's most consistent performers, compiling a 12–1 overall record and a 7–1 mark at the No. 4 singles position while riding a seven-match winning streak. Hollweg was also named Southland Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 10.

At the top of the lineup, Salome Fluri has posted an 8–1 record, including an 8–1 mark at No. 1 singles, and has earned SLC Player of the Week honors twice this season on Feb. 3 and Feb. 17.
Morelli expects a highly competitive match against one of the league's top teams.

"McNeese is a very talented team with high-quality coaches," Morelli said. "We expect it to be a battle."

Following Saturday's match, NSU travels to Hammond to face Southeastern on Monday at the Southeastern Tennis Center.

The Lions (9-3, 2-1) enter conference play and feature a balanced lineup led by Taisia Bolsova, who is 4–0 this season, including a 3–0 mark at the No. 6 position while riding a four-match winning streak.

Adriana Tirado has also been a steady contributor for Southeastern, posting a 9–2 overall record and a 5–2 mark in dual matches.

"It's very important for us to stay consistent across all six courts," Morelli said. "They are another tough team."

With two strong conference opponents on the schedule, the Lady Demons will look to carry their recent momentum into a challenging road stretch as Southland play continues.

"Anyone can beat anyone in this conference," Morelli said. "We're focused on ourselves and competing to the best of our abilities."
