Match Recap: Lady Demon Tennis | | Zach Freihofer, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

Lady Demons surge early in win over Tyler JC

NATCHITOCHES — Northwestern State secured a 5–2 victory over Tyler Junior College on Friday afternoon at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex, earning its second straight home win behind a balanced performance in doubles and singles.

Head coach Marcos Morelli was pleased with the overall progress.

"It was a good match," Morelli said. "I'm happy with our process in both singles and doubles, and I think we continue to make steps forward."

The Lady Demons once again set the tone in doubles play.

Martina Acebedo Bonocore and Athina Grigoriadou delivered a dominant 6–0 win at the No. 2 position, while Sofi Garcia and Lija Mumlek followed with a 6–3 victory at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. The No. 1 court was left unfinished at 3–3.

Morelli credited the team's growth in doubles, particularly from the freshman pairing.

"I think all three courts in doubles are having a good process," Morelli said. "We're playing on our terms, and I'm happy with where we are."

As for areas of improvement, the message remains consistent.

"We just need to make sure we keep making steps forward and don't fall back," he said. "But we're doing well."

In singles, NSU showed its depth across the lineup.

Grigoriadou earned a 6–1, 6–2 victory at No. 2, while Hukasian controlled her match 6–2, 6–1 at No. 4. Garcia added a steady 6–1, 6–1 win at No. 5, helping the Lady Demons build a decisive lead.

"We have a deep team," Morelli said. "All of the girls, regardless of who steps in, are following the process and competing the right way."

The most dramatic moment of the afternoon came at No. 3, where Acebedo Bonocore found herself trailing 4–1 in the opening set against Alix Dol. The freshman responded by regaining control and rallying to take the first set 7–5 before cruising to a 6–0 finish in the second.

"She fights so hard," Morelli said. "I'm proud of her. We talked about having good positioning and playing on her terms, and I think that was the difference for her to come back in the first set."

TJC picked up points at No. 1, where Dina Lipovski defeated Honoka Umeda 6–3, 6–4, and at No. 6, where Sylvie Peart lost the first set to Lija Mumlek 4–6 before Mumlek retired.

The Lady Demons' match against Grambling, scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed due to inclement weather in the area. A makeup date will be announced at a later time.
