DENTON, Texas — The Northwestern State Lady Demons continue their early-season road stretch Sunday, traveling to Denton to face North Texas at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
NSU (2-1) enters the matchup riding momentum from a hard-fought 5–2 home victory over Jackson State on Thursday, the team's first win at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex this season.
The Lady Demons secured the doubles point and showcased composure in singles play, highlighted by a key comeback performance from
Maria Farina that clinched the match.
Head coach
Marcos Morelli said the win over Jackson State provided valuable momentum and confidence as the team prepares for another challenging test.
"It's going to be a great opportunity for the girls to compete at the highest level," Morelli said. "Matches like this help show where we are and what we need to continue building."
The Lady Demons found success against JSU by setting the tone early in doubles and carrying that discipline into singles play. The Demons claimed two of three doubles matches before earning four singles victories to secure the team win.
"It was a combination of things," Morelli said. "It started with strong performances in doubles and was followed by maturity and consistency in singles. The group stayed composed and trusted the work."
Sunday's matchup against UNT (0-2) serves as another measuring stick for the Lady Demons.
The Mean Green enter the weekend after falling to Houston, 4–0, and Rice, 6–0, but have had the upper hand in the recent history of the series.
NSU aims for its first win in Denton since 2015 while trying to snap North Texas' three-match winning streak and slow a stretch in which the Mean Green have gone 8–2 in their last 10 matches, including a 6–1 victory over the Lady Demons last season in Natchitoches.
Sunday's matchup against UNT presents another measuring stick for the Lady Demons, as they aim to carry that same approach into a road environment.
"We want to commit to our process from start to finish and play on our terms," Morelli said. "If we do that, we'll give ourselves a chance to compete in every position."
