LUBBOCK, Texas—Over the past three seasons, the Northwestern State women's track and field team has built a dynasty.
In those three seasons, the Lady Demons have won five of the six Southland Conference team titles, including three indoor championships in a row.
A new, but still outstanding Lady Demons group aims for four in a row—and that chase begins at the Corky Classic.
The meet takes place for the Demons and Lady Demons on Friday and Saturday. The field events begin at 3 p.m. on Friday with the field events and the track events start at 4 p.m.
"This is what we worked hard for all fall," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "Getting to go to a meet is always fun. For the coaches, it is a little nerve-wracking because getting everything all set up and done is a task with three of us."
A total of 22 teams will be participating in the meet, including Texas A&M, Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Purdue, SMU, TCU and Texas.
Much like most teams, NSU has significant turnover from last year.
On the women's side, the team is still a favorite for the conference team title once again, even with losing indoor champions from last season
Maygan Shaw and
Madison Brown, as well as multis athlete
Raven-Symone Jarrett.
Shaw was an All-American last outdoor season in the 400-meter dash and was a standout both on and off the track.
"You can't really use the word 'replace' with Maygan," Heimerman said. "We'll just try to take her space because I don't want to disrespect Maygan in any which way.
"To try and take Raven's spot, Coach (Alex) Wills did a great job, as we've brought in a good set of girls that can fill in all the voids and maybe enhance in a few spots on depth. It should be a fun year, but we still have to go out and perform and get better each day."
However, even with the departures, the Lady Demons retain quite a bit of talent from the championship team from last year.
Among the returners are sprinter/hurdler
Dynia Lewis, sprinter/jumper
Samari Finney, sprinter
Margaret Conteh and thrower
Ryah Dates.
Finney is one of the best sprinters and jumpers in the SLC and earned conference female athlete of the year in the outdoor season last year. One of her teammates in the 4x400 relay is Conteh, who earned multiple medals at the indoor meet, including as a part of the 4x400 relay team. She also finished second—only to Shaw—in the 400-meter dash.
Lewis, on the other hand, took home the silver in the 60-meter hurdles at the conference indoor meet last year, helping the Lady Demons win the team title.
Dates finished with a silver medal in shot put, as she tossed a 49-2.25 as a freshman in her first conference meet.
While the Lady Demons have won it three years in a row, the Demons have come close to winning it in recent years but have not been able to collect the title.
Among the top returners for the Demons are sprinter
Tavis Wilson, jumper
Randy Kelly and 2025 All-American jumper
Roy Morris.
Wilson is coming off a strong outdoor season, one in which he took home a pair of medals and made the regionals as a member of the 4x100 relay.
Kelly has been one of the best high jumpers in the conference since he stepped foot on campus and has made the regionals in each of his first three seasons. After taking home the silver in 2024, he just missed out on a medal last season and aims to take home the gold at the conference meet.
Morris is fresh off his All-American season in the long jump, finishing 15
th and aims to build off that sensational freshman campaign. In the indoor season, he took the bronze in his first conference meet.
Following the meet, the teams take a week off before competing at the Pittsburg State Invitational on Jan. 31.
