NATCHITOCHES – After sweeping conference opponents this past weekend, Northwestern State junior
Sofi Garcia has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week.
Thanks in part to her stellar performances she helped the Lady Demons (4-5, 4-0) remain undefeated in conference play as she delivered key victories in both singles and doubles competition.
On Monday, Garcia played a crucial role in the Lady Demons' 4-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Competing at No. 6 singles, she dominated Juliette Jalai with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory, securing an important point for NSU.
Just days earlier, Garcia battled through a tough singles match against UTRGV's Mariia Bakhtina, emerging victorious in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), to help clinch a 5-2 win against the Vaqueros.
Over the course of four conference matches, Garcia remained undefeated in singles. In doubles, Garcia is 3-1 including a pair of wins with
Zoi Spyrou and one with
Maria Farina.
"Sofi is a tough player," says head coach
Marcos Morelli. "I am very proud of the way she handles things on and off the court."
The Lady Demons look to extend their winning streak in their next matchup against Rhode Island on Wednesday, March 12, concluding a four-match homestand.
