SAN MARCOS, Texas — Northwestern State tennis opened play at the Texas State Invitational on Saturday with a strong showing, highlighted by multiple singles victories and a competitive effort across doubles competition. 

In singles play, Honoka Umeda and Martina Acebedo Bonocore led the charge for the Lady Demons with two victories apiece.  

Umeda outlasted Texas State's Jemma Cave in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-8, before earning a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win over UIW's Alexandra Mille.  

Acebedo continued her strong form with a hard-fought 7-6(4), 6-2 win against Stephen F. Austin's Antonello Taco, followed by a competitive matchup against UTRGV's Maria Bakhtina. 

Maria Farina and Athina Grigoriadou also turned in impressive singles performances.  

Farina secured a straight-sets victory over UIW's Luciana Perez Hernandez, 6-1, 6-3, while Grigoriadou notched a 6-3, 6-3 win against UTRGV's Luna Buijtenhujs to close the day on a high note. 

The Lady Demons earned one doubles victory as Grigoriadou and Acebedo powered past Texas State's Olivia Collins and Chantajah Mills, 6-1.  

NSU's other tandems were narrowly edged in tightly contested matches, with Farina and Lolita Hukasian falling 6-3 to Texas State's Ireland Simme and Emily Niers.  

Umeda and Zoi Spyrou dropped a close 7-5 decision to Texas State's Charlotte Roesch and Stoney Cooks. 

The Lady Demons return to action Sunday for the final day of competition, looking to build on Saturday's strong results and finish the weekend with momentum heading into the remainder of the fall season.
