UIW sweeps seasons series from Demons in three sets

NSU falls in straights sets to UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Northwestern State Demons' volleyball team was swept by the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals Thursday night (25-11, 25-16 and 25-20) in Southland Conference competition at the McDermott Center.

In the opening set, the Demons (1-24, 0-11 SLC) appeared to be on the way to a highly competitive set as Samaya Wesson's kill tied the match at 5-5. However, the Cardinals (12-11, 8-3 SLC) scored 20 of the next 26 points to take the first frame hitting .440 for the set.

In set two, NSU's Jade Longlad recorded her 43rd ace of the season to retake the lead over UT-Rio Grande Valley's Isabella Constantini. But the Cardinals continued to control the match as they scored four straight points after Longlad's ace making it 10-3 and cruising to the set win.

The Demons battled to the end as they tied the match at 20-20 in the third set. However, UIW scored the match's final five points as Alex Beauchamp got the kill to end the match for the Cardinals.

NSU was led by Olivia Bush and Makenna Tyron with eight kills each. Longlad added 24 assists to aid the Demons. UIW's Kyla Malon had 10 kills while Calissa Allison added 22 assists.

With the win, UIW swept the season against the Demons for the second straight year.

Next up, the Demons head east to take on the Houston Christian Huskies Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
