DENTON, Texas – All three Northwestern State tennis doubles teams picked up wins on the first day of the Diving Eagle invite on Friday on the University of North Texas campus.
 
Senior Tjasa Klevisar and junior Zoi Spyrou continued their perfect fall tournament play with a first-round win against Texas State's Kiana Graham and Chantajah Mills 7-6 but would fall in the second round to Louisiana Tech's Ana Rodriguez and Maria Tsironi 6-3.
 
Sophomore Honoka Umeda and freshman Valeria Ortega picked up a first-round win against Louisiana Tech's pairing of Mio Kozaki and June Vigneron 6-4. The two fell in the second round to UT-Arlington's Ana Paula Jimenez and Maria Lucia Araoz 6-2.
 
Junior Maria Farina and freshman Pika Doberlet joined in and won their first-round match-up against Texas State's Tadiwa Mauchi and Emily Niers 7-6. The two lost in the second round to University of North Texas Marina Adati and Lou Chalard 6-2
 
"There were improvements, but not to the point where we need to be," head coach Marcos Morelli said. "We aren't willing to play simple, but we are getting better."
 
Farina would win her first-round match-up against UT-Arlington's Ioana Dumitrescu, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
 
All other Lady Demons dropped their first-round singles match-ups.
 
The tournament continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the continuation of singles and the last rounds of doubles.
