ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands—The Gumbs twins made a statement, each winning an event, on their first day of competition at the British Virgin Islands Championships on Friday evening.
Starting their fight to reach July's Olympics, both
Djimon Gumbs (javelin) and
Diamante Gumbs (hammer) took home top spots in events.
Fresh off his appearance at nationals, Diamante tossed 56.30 meters in the hammer throw to win the event. Djimon tossed a season best, recording 55.40 meters to claim the top spot in the javelin.
Djimon's also competed in the javelin at the Southland Conference Outdoor meet, nearly cracking the podium, throwing 53.79 meters.
If that wasn't enough,
Djimon Gumbs grabbed third in the hammer and
Diamante Gumbs collected a second-place finish in the javelin.
In the javelin, Diamante posted a distance of 43.44 meters, while Djimon tossed a distance of 37.39 in the hammer.
The pair wraps up the BVI Championships by taking part in the discus and shot put, while
Zachaeus Beard aims to make the Olympics in the 100-meter dash Saturday evening.
Djimon is closest to cracking the top 32 in the world in the shot put at No. 70, which would automatically qualify him for the Olympics. He ranks 154
th in the discus. If Beard makes it past the first round, the finals are Sunday evening in the 100.
