Demons fall short in déjà vu loss to HCU

HOUSTON – Northwestern State experienced a lot of unfortunate déjà vu in Saturday's series finale against HCU.

A near copy of Friday night's 2-0 loss to the Huskies played out again on Saturday as the Demons got a second straight high-quality outing from senior Kenzie Seely in the circle, but a lack of offensive support leading to a second straight 2-0 loss to complete the weekend.

After throwing her 11th complete game of the season where she allowed just three hits and only two baserunners after the second inning, Seely scattered seven hits across five-plus innings of work allowing just two runs again on Saturday.

"Kenzie did her job again today," head coach Lacy Prejean said. "That's a tough thing to do after pitching like she did last night to turn around ask her to do it again today. She battled from the very beginning, worked through some pressure with some runners on base and the defense did its job behind her when it counted. But you have to score runs to win games and we didn't do that today."

Like they did in both games on Friday, the Huskies jumped ahead in the early innings, forcing the Demons to play catch-up for the fifth straight game.

A leadoff double and wild pitch put the go-ahead run at third with no outs to start the bottom of the second. HCU took the lead on a soft grounder to second that created the first out of the frame but also the first run of the game.

Seely worked around back-to-back one-out hits in the third to put up a scoreless frame getting a strikeout for out number two and Ashlyn Walker throwing out her 15th potential base stealer of the season at third to end the frame.

Walker is now tied for third in NSU single-season history with 15 runners thrown out, remains atop the conference in the category and in the top five nationally.

HCU starting pitcher Katy Janes retired the first nine batters she faced in order to start the game, keeping the slight edge on Seely with the slim run support she received in the second inning.

The Demons' only true run-scoring opportunity of the game came in the fourth when Taylor Williams reached on an infield single to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs in the inning, Laney Roos hit a roller through the right side for the second hit of the inning but another perfect throw from the outfield got Williams at the plate attempting to tie the game for the final out.

Roos' single was the final batter to reach base for the Demons in the game as Janes retired the next nine hitters in a row to finish off the third complete game for the Husky pitching staff on the weekend.

A leadoff single in the bottom of that inning led to HCU's only other run in the game as a steal of second and groundout advancement allowed the run to score on a bunt single back to the pitching circle.

NSU turned the first of two double plays in the game to get out of the fourth before Seely handed the ball to Ryleigh Denton following a leadoff single in the sixth.

Denton put up a zero in the inning thanks to a head's up play from one of the best defensive catchers in the conference. Walker, backing up a potential double play ground ball, corralled the wild throw and after seeing the runner take one step towards second base, immediately applied the tag for the second out of the inning.

Denton got a weak tapper back to her in the circle to finish the frame, but the late-game magic the Demons have seen the past handful of games did not show itself again in the top of the seventh.

Williams and Roos picked up NSU's only two hits of the game and Seely suffered another tough-luck loss after allowing just two runs to score in the game. It was the 11th start the season where Seely allowed two runs or fewer and her fourth loss in those outings.

The Demons close the regular season with a four-game home stand beginning on Tuesday against Grambling. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
