NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State baseball team took several steps forward Wednesday night against visiting UL Lafayette.
Facing the Ragin' Cajuns for the second time in a week, the Demons pitched more effectively and played clean defense but were unable to deliver a key base hit as they fell to the Cajuns 3-0 at Brown-Stroud Field.
"I'm proud of the way the ball club competed tonight," first-year head coach
Chris Bertrand said. "I'm proud of the game we played in two of the three phases. I'm proud of the growth and development we showed. Last week at their place was a totally different game. You saw us learn and grow and improve."
Northwestern State (4-9) suffered its second straight shutout loss but produced many more offensive opportunities than in Sunday's loss to Troy.
The Demons put a runner in scoring position in seven innings but were unable to come up with a run-scoring hit thanks in large part to 15 strikeouts. Of those 15, nine came with runners in scoring position.
"We need to be better offensively, and we'll go back to work and get better," Bertrand said. "Credit to (Cajuns head coach) Matt (Deggs) and those guys, because a lot of our non-success at the plate is the quality of the arms they threw. That's really good arms. Those guys did a really good job, but the number of punchouts, we know we have to do some work in that area."
Five Demon pitchers nearly matched the six pitchers the Cajuns (6-6) used to record the five-hit shutout.
Freshman right-hander
Kevin Robinson (0-1) started and took the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on five hits in four innings. The lone tally against Robinson came on Jose Torres' flare single to shallow center field with two outs in the fourth.
The Cajuns added two more runs off the bat of Lee Amedee, whose hit-and-run double scored Kyle DeBarge, who led off with a single. Amedee added a solo home run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
In addition to Robinson, right-handers John Sharhdar,
Conner Bivins and
Parker Thomas and left-hander
Tim O'Connor were sharp.
"I'm proud of every pitcher who took the mound tonight," Bertrand said. "They did an incredible job. There were a lot of lessons and notes to be taken from everyone who took the mound. Everyone grew and developed in a very positive way.
"We played pretty good defense, and we grew in that area. We limited the bunt game. We limited the stolen bases. We made them truly earn every single one of those runs."
Daniel Burroway was the lone Demon to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Amedee paced the Cajuns with a 3-for-4 night.
The Demons return to action Friday when they travel to Little Rock to open a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
