BEAUMONT, Texas – Maria Farina and Honoka Umeda advanced to the next round for the Northwestern State tennis team, as it began its second day of the Joy Pyburn Invitational on the campus Lamar.
 
Farina and Umeda took the court and dominated Southeastern's Aitana Darder and Leana Gomez 6-1, continuing the Lady Demons into the bracket.
 
Junior Zoi Spyrou and freshman Valeria Ortega paired up in a round two win against Lamar's Savannah Bijlsma and Emma Palus 6-1, before falling in the third round to Southeastern's Taisia Bolsova and Boglarka Csordas 3-6
 
Farina and Spyrou both lost in the Draw B Singles Semifinals. Farina lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Yana Mykytyn 4-6, 5-7. Spyrou lost to AMCC's Leticia Tarocco 1-6, 6-2, 8-10.
 
Ortega lost in the Draw C Singles Semifinals to AMCC's Juliette Jalai 2-6, 1-6.
 
Umeda fell in the Draw A Singles Semifinals to AMCC's Ana Veroux 4-6, 4-6.
 
"Today was a good test to see where we are as a team and what we have to do to get better," head coach Marcos Morelli said.
 
Umeda is competing for the third-place prize in the Draw A Singles finals tomorrow while Ortega competing for the third-place prize in the Draw C Singles finals.
 
Farina and Spyrou face off in a Demon battle for third place in the Draw B Singles final tomorrow.
 
Junior Sofi Garcia looks to finish off strong in the Draw A South stage against LSU-Alexandria's Nahia Echaide Gonzalez tomorrow.
 
Northwestern State aims to finish off the final Fall tournament in successful fashion at the Joy Pyburn Invitational on Sunday.
