Tennis starts off strong in last Fall Season Tournament

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Northwestern State Tennis team started strong in Friday's singles match slate at the Joy Pyburn Invitational.

Five of the Lady Demons picked up wins.

"We did a good job today," head coach Marcos Morelli stated. "The work we put in practice the past month was the key to success today."

Junior Zoi Spyrou dominated her first-round matchup against Aitana Darder of Southeastern, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Sophomores Maria Farina and Honoka Umeda both continued the Demons' hot streak. Farina battled against Lamar's Megan Do in a win 6-1, 6-1, and Umeda continued her fall dominance with a win against LSU-Alexandria's Nahia Echaide Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4.

Freshmen Pika Doberlet and Valeria Ortega joined in the successful first day with Doberlet winning against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Zoe Moley 6-4, 6-4. Ortega won against Lamar's Martina Alcaino Vergara 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Sofi Garcia played in her first match of the fall, dropping it to Southeastern's Leana Gomez 7-5, 6-1.

Four Lady Demons played in doubles matches on Friday.

Spyrou and Ortega took the court together, winning their first doubles match against LSU-Alexandria's Gianna Panaggio and Kanupriya Rajawat 6-4.

Farina and Umeda lost their first doubles match to Texas A&M-CC's Kseniya Ramanouskaya and Yana Mykytyn 6-3.

The Demons are back in action Saturday for the continuation of the tournament.
