NATCHITOCHES – Fresh off an impressive campaign in league play, Paige Wise earned First Team All-Southland Conference, highlighting four Northwestern State tennis players honored, the conference announced Wednesday.
The two teams were voted on by the sports information directors and coaches from the Southland Conference.
In addition to Wise, Ayu Ishibashi earned second-team All-Conference for No. 2 singles and the doubles pairing of Dorota Szczygielska and Sofi Garcia earned second-team All-Conference for No. 3 doubles.
Wise, a transfer from Francis Marion University, compiled a 5-2 mark at the No. 3 singles spot, earning her the first team nod.
The Ballito, South Africa, native, has come on strong at the end of the year, winning seven of her last 10 singles matches, leading a late-season surge from the Lady Demons to earn the No. 4 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
With Wise's selection, the Lady Demons have had a member on the first team each of the last five seasons, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.
At the No. 2 singles position, Ishibashi compiled a 9-3 overall record and 5-2 in league competition. She clinched the match for the Lady Demons against Southeastern Louisiana to end the regular season.
It is Ishibashi's second SLC All-Conference honor in as many seasons, earning a spot on the first team in 2022.
Szczygielska and Garcia were paired up for the last five matches of the season recording a perfect 5-0 mark at No. 3.
They took the doubles point for NSU against New Orleans, setting the stage for the Lady Demons to take a 7-0 victory.
Szczygielska, who missed all last year with injury, is 29-10 all-time in doubles and her .730 winning percentage in doubles ranks 18th in program history.
Brandelyn Fulgenzi of UIW was named the SLC Player of the Year, while New Orleans' Didi Bredberg Canizares earned Freshman of the Year.
Conference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the final two superlatives, as Naomi Moi McKenzie won the Newcomer of the Year and Steve Moore won Coach of the Year.
The Lady Demons return to action Friday at 10 a.m. against NJIT in the conference tournament.
