BIRMINGHAM, Alabama—During her three seasons with Northwestern State, Lynell Washington has had remarkable moments.

And this one ranks near the top.

Washington ran a meet-record 7.32 in the 60-meters and finished tops in her prelims twice on the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Washington, a junior from New Orleans, also won the 200-meter prelims with a 23.97, and has a chance to win both titles Monday.

The 7.32 time in the 60-meters is the tops in the SLC this season, surpassing her previous best in 2023 of 7.38, and matching her personal best.

Just behind Washington in the 60-meter prelims was Aarika Lister, whose 7.50 came in second, advancing both to the finals. Victoria Byrd's 7.76 is a personal best.

In the 200-meter prelims, the Lady Demons narrowly missed having four athletes reach the finals. Behind Washington was Vanessa Balde in third (24.42), Maygan Shaw in sixth (24.53). Aarika Lister barely missed, finishing ninth (24.66).

Two also made it in the men's 60-meters to the finals. Dylan Swain's personal best time of 6.76 and Zachaeus Beard's 6.76 came in third and fourth, respectively. Simon Wulff, who ranked fourth in the event in the conference this season, was a little banged up toward the end of the race.

"The first day went ok," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "We had some great performances, but we also had some bad performances. We did not make up the points lost by Annemarie (Broussard) and Simon (Wulff)'s injuries. To battle or be the in contention for a championship we have to have more people step up than mess up."

Austin Simoneaux added a personal best with a time of 6.90 for an 11th place finish in the 60-meters.

While Washington dominated on the women's side, Destine-Unique Scott did the same on the men's side. He had a pair of first place finishes in 200-meter and the 400-meter prelims.

In the 200-meters, Scott ran a 21.04 to top the event and is joined by Swain, who finished third with a time of 21.38. Cyrus Jacobs narrowly missed the cut to qualify with a personal-best 21.57 to finish ninth place.

NSU had six of the top 12 finishers, as they were joined by Wulff (21.79) in 10th and Mikkel Johansson (21.90) in 12th.

Desmond Duncan posted a personal best time of 22.16 as well.

Scott was the only Demon to qualify in the 400-meters, but Cyrus Jacobs (48.84), Desmond Duncan (50.42) and Evan Wilson (51.85) posted personal bests.

In the women's 400-meter prelims, Sanaria Butler (54.72) came in first, as the Lady Demons took the top two spots. Maygan Shaw (54.73) finished right behind her. Sian Weller scored a personal best of 57.86 11th.

"A couple things are out of our control with lane draws like in the 200 and 400," Heimerman said. "I hope we can change the way we do it for those events in the future. We have a good number of kids in running event finals tomorrow and some good field events.

"We should score a good number of points. I'm expecting this group to come out firing tomorrow and we will see where we end up."

Vanessa Balde's personal best time of 8.64 came in third in the 60-meter hurdle prelims to advance to the finals. Orsciana Beard (8.97) joins her in the finals. Jessica Pitcher posted a personal best time of 9.01 to place 11th.

On the men's side in the 60-meter hurdles, Taj Morris advanced to the finals with a personal best time of 8.16, placing fifth.

Korbin Shumate's eighth place finish with a time of 1:56.00 in the men's 800-meter prelims advances him to the finals. On the women's side, Ceyda Bayur ran a personal best time of 2:21.07, placing 11th.

In the field events, Diamante Gumbs won the silver in the men's weight throw, leading a pair of Demons who earned points for NSU. Gumbs placed second with a distance of 60-4, while Tarajh Hudson's personal best distance of 53-7 came in sixth.

Justin Craft tied a personal best with a toss of 46-8, placing 11th.

On the women's side in the weight throw, Deanmonique Granville (54-1.75) and Bernesha Knowles (53-1) each earned points for NSU, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Both athletes recorded personal bests.

Akira Phillip also posted a personal event in the weight throw, posting a 48-4, barely missing out on points with a ninth-place finish.

Andrew Gilreath cleared posted a personal best 23-11 in the long jump, finishing second. Adam Lindo finished sixth with a distance of 23-7.25, also a personal best.

Carolin Bielert and Abria Paul each posted personal bests in both the women's pentathlon shot put and long jump. Bielert posted a 35-6.5 in the shot put and 17-11.5, placing fourth and ninth, respectively, while Paul recorded a 28-9 and 17-2.25, placing eighth and 16th.

In the women's pole vault, Karlyn Trahan cleared 12-1.5, earning the silver.
