NATCHITOCHES – Seven Northwestern State track and field athletes were selected to the Southland Conference All-Academic teams, the league announced Tuesday.
Â
Five Lady Demons and two Demons made the cut, which required a 3.0 GPA and competitive accolades.
Â
Three female pole vaulters – Annemarie Broussard, Karlyn Trahan and Madison Brown – were picked to the team, joined by hurdler Janiel Moore and sprinter Erin Wilson.
Â
On the men's side, Destine Scott and Nikaoli Williams added the academic honor to their gold medals at the Southland Conference meet.
Â
Voters included league coaches, sports information directors and academic advising personnel.
Â
Broussard (3.71 in health and exercise science) became the fourth female vaulter in SLC history to win four straight pole vault titles, capturing the last two indoor and outdoor crowns. The senior garnered her third all-academic selection after she broke her own school record with a 13-9.75 to qualify for her second NCAA East Preliminaries.
Â
Trahan joined Broussard on the medal stand with her second bronze of her career. The sophomore has a perfect 4.0 GPA in nursing.
Â
Madison Brown was the fourth-place finisher at the SLC Outdoor Championships for an NSU women's team that took third place, the 12th straight top-three finish at the league championships. The sophomore holds a 3.90 in health and exercise science.
Â
Janiel Moore caps an illustrious career with her second all-academic honor. Moore took gold in the 400 hurdles, where she qualified a week later with a personal record 58.69 to qualify for the NCAA East Regional. The senior (4.0 GPA in her graduate mental health counseling program) owns the second-fastest 400 hurdles time in NSU history.
Â
Erin Wilson added individual sprint success to her bonafide relay prowess as she finished fourth in the 400 meters on top of another 4x400 relay gold. The senior maintains a 3.86 GPA in nursing.
Â
Scott makes his second all-academic appearance after capturing gold in the 400 meters and silver in the 200. The junior qualified in the 400 for the NCAA East Preliminaries with a personal record 46.38.
Â
Williams qualified for four different events in the NCAA East Prelims after snatching gold in the triple jump, silver in the long jump and reaching the 100 meter finals. The sophomore (3.38 GPA in electronic engineering technology) competed in the long jump (25-8) and 100 meters (10.24) as well as the 4x100 relay at regionals.
The men's second-place finish is its best in the Mike Heimerman era.
