NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State baseball team's battery was all-conference worthy in 2022.
Sophomore catcher
Bo Willis and junior right-handed pitcher
Johnathan Harmon were named first-team All-Southland Conference on Tuesday, the Demons' top two representatives on the three all-conference teams, which were voted on by league coaches and sports information directors.
Willis and Harmon were two of four Demons who earned all-conference honors. Joining that pair were second-team pitcher
Cal Carver and third-team second baseman
Daunte Stuart, both of whom made an all-conference team for the second straight season.
Harmon, a sophomore right-hander from Hornbeck, led the Southland Conference in starters' ERA, pitching to a 3.04 mark while posting a 5-5 record as the Demons' No. 2 starter throughout the season.
The No. 1 Major League Baseball Draft prospect according to D1Baseball.com, Harmon tied for the conference lead with a pair of complete games, going the distance in wins at New Orleans on March 26 and against Houston Baptist on April 23. Harmon shared the team lead with five wins and ranked second in innings (77, third in the conference) despite missing his final regular-season start.
Willis, a Weatherford College transfer, finished his first season in a Northwestern State uniform with a flourish, going 14-for-28 with three doubles, four home runs and 14 RBIs in a seven-game stretch from May 6-14.
He shared the team lead in home runs (11) with
Jeffrey Elkins and paced the Demons with 45 RBIs, the most by a Demon hitter since David Fry's 55 in 2018. Willis' 11 home runs are tied for second in the Southland while his RBI total places him sixth. Willis' .536 slugging percentage was good for eighth in the conference.
Carver, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, led the Southland Conference in fewest walks per nine innings (1.98) and in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.18) while ranking second in strikeouts (71) and eighth in ERA (4.31). A repeat second-team selection, Carver's 77 1-3 innings pitched ranked second in the league as well.
Stuart, a sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas, repeated as an all-conference selection after making the second team as a freshman. Stuart was Northwestern State's leading hitter (.290) for the second straight season and finished eighth in the Southland in sacrifice flies (4) and 10
th in hits (58).
Elkins, a junior left fielder, earned inclusion on the All-Defensive team after handling 100 chances (97 putouts, three assists) without committing an error.
Northwestern State travels to LSU tonight at 6:30 for their final regular-season game before opening Southland Conference Tournament play at 1 p.m. Thursday against No. 4 seed Nicholls in Lake Charles.
