NATCHITOCHES – One of the Northwestern State track and field program's most accomplished throwers is the first Exchange Bank and Trust Demon Great of the Game for the 2019 season.
Latrell Frederick, a three-time All-American javelin thrower, will be recognized as the Demon Great of the Game during the first quarter of Saturday's 6 p.m. home opener against Midwestern State at Turpin Stadium.
Frederick, a Benton native, was a three-time Southland Conference champion in the javelin and the 1999 USA Junior National champion. He produced consecutive fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2000 and 2001. He established the school record in the "modern javelin" with a throw of 261-3 in 2001.
After suffering a serious elbow injury at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships – while throwing 255-7 at that meet – Frederick returned at the 2003 Southland Outdoor Championships to capture his third consecutive conference title. He followed that by winning the 2003 Mideast Regional championship before securing his third All-American honor by finishing 12
