BATON ROUGE—Freshman Mariella Minetti won her first round singles match Friday at the ITA Southern Regional.

She'll play Mississippi State's Marta Falceto Saturday. Falceto upset he No. 6 singles player in the tournament Friday, LSU's Nina Geissler.

Minetti defeated UL Lafayette's Floraine Picaut in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Picaut played No. 1 singles for Ragin' Cajuns a vast majority of last season.

She will play against Auburn's Georgia Axon Saturday. Axon upset the No. 9 singles player in the tournament, Mississippi State's Alexandra Mikhailuk.

Marietti and Szczygielska weren't done, though, as they were a part of a pair of Northwestern State doubles teams to advance to the second round as well. The teams of Minetti and Patrycja Polanska and Szczygielska and Judit Castillo Gargallo each had triumphs Friday.

Szczygielska and Castillo Gargallo squeezed out an 8-6 victory over Alabama's Luca Fabian and Ann Selim, while Minetti and Polanska took down McNeese's Dalia Ahmed and Sofia San Jose Moreno 8-5.

Each team has a tall task Saturday, as Szczygielska and Castillo Gargallo play against the No. 4 seed, LSU's Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley, while Minetti and Polanska attempt to take down the No. 2 seed, Mississippi State's Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine.

Freshman Dorota Szczygielska fell in the main singles draw, losing to Southern Miss' Ebru Zeynep Yazgan in three sets in the opening round. After winning the first set 7-6(3), she dropped to-back 6-3 sets.

Day three will begin Saturday with doubles at 9 a.m.
