NATCHITOCHES – The spoils of breaking a 13-year NCAA Regional drought continue to pour in for the Northwestern State baseball team.
For the second time in a month, senior first baseman
David Fry, junior pitcher
Jerry Maddox and second-year head coach
Bobby Barbier have earned individual acclaim for their 2018 seasons. This time, the awards come as part of the 2018 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Collegiate Baseball Team, announced by the statewide organization Saturday.
The trio repeated their awards from the All-Southland Conference Team named in May with Fry taking home Hitter of the Year honors, Maddox being awarded the Newcomer of the Year and Barbier collecting his second Coach of the Year accolade in as many months.
"We play in a state full of great baseball," Barbier said. "What an honor for Jerry and Dave to be recognized with all of the great players in Louisiana."
Fry and Maddox were part of the 14-player first team while junior left-hander
Ridge Heisler was an honorable mention selection by a statewide panel of media members and sports information personnel.
It marked the second straight season Fry has been named All-Louisiana after a second-team selection a season ago. In his final Northwestern State campaign, Fry became the first Demon since Terry Joseph in 1995 to earn LSWA Hitter or Player of the Year honors.
Fry led Northwestern State in the Triple Crown categories for the second straight season, hitting .327 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs. The latter two were tops in the Southland Conference.
Fry established school single-season records in at-bats (245) and doubles (26) while tying the school record for games played in a season (62). His 74 doubles and 851 at-bats are school career records and his 31 home runs are tied for the most by an NSU player in a career.
A seventh-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, Fry currently is hitting .333 with a double and a home run for Rookie level Helena.
"David continues to pile up the rewards after having one of the best offensive seasons in Demon baseball history," Barbier said. "I'm very proud of him and all he has accomplished."
In his first season at Northwestern State, Maddox posted an 8-3 record with a 1.88 ERA, the ninth-lowest single-season mark in school history.
In addition to leading the Demons in wins, Maddox led the Southland Conference in ERA and batting average against (.182). After moving into the weekend rotation in early April, Maddox went 5-1 with a 1.74 ERA, holding opponents to a .176 batting average.
He tossed six shutout innings in the Demons' 9-0 win against San Diego State in the elimination game of the NCAA Corvallis Regional, the school's first regional victory in 13 years.
"Jerry deserves this recognition," Barbier said. "He came in this year and forced his way into the rotation and kept performing when we threw him in there."
Barbier oversaw the largest single-season turnaround in school history, winning 18 more games than in the 2017 season.
NSU's 38 victories were its most in a season since 2005. Its Southland Conference Tournament championship was the first in program history, leading to its fourth NCAA Regional appearance.
He returned to pitching coach duties as well after a one-year absence and helped the Demons pitchers post a 3.41 ERA, a mark that ranks 18
th nationally.
"Coach Barbier molded me into a more mature pitcher," Maddox said. "He leads by example and is a selfless individual. More importantly, he takes the challenge to turn young college kids into men, and he's doing a great job of it."
Heisler, the Demons fourth representative on the teams, posted a 7-3 record with a 3.40 ERA, leading Northwestern State with 77 strikeouts to earn honorable mention honors.
