Game Recap: Demon Baseball | | Jason Pugh, Assistant Sports Information Director

Fry's home runs power Demons to sweep of ACU, spot in SLC Tournament

NATCHITOCHES – Among David Fry's litany of offensive accomplishments during his Northwestern State baseball career, one thing seemed oddly out of place.

In Fry's first 209 career games, he had homered 28 times – exactly once in 28 different games.

Playing the final home game of his decorated career, Fry burned an even more indelible memory in the collective Brown-Stroud Field minds Sunday afternoon, homering twice in the first four innings and driving in five runs as Northwestern State completed a three-game Southland Conference sweep of Abilene Christian with a 6-1 victory.

"That's how the script should be written, right – for Dave to end with a day like that?" second-year head coach Bobby Barbier asked. "He's meant so much to our program. He's an incredible player, obviously. He's down here catching bullpens right now for our relievers who didn't get a chance to throw this weekend. That shows what kind of teammate he is. That's special to have in your program."

A day after establishing NSU's single-season doubles record (25) and its career at-bat mark (811 and counting), Fry broke a scoreless tie with a two-run, third-inning home run off Clayton Brasher (0-4).

An inning later, Fry took Logan Patterson deep to left field for a three-run shot, giving him five RBIs and NSU a 6-0 lead.

"I had struggled a little bit against the heater this weekend, so I tried to stay short," said Fry, whose 11 home runs are the most by a Demons' hitter in a single season of the BBCOR bat era that began in 2011.

"I just wanted to get a pitch to hit and get us going on a Sunday where we had a chance to get a sweep."

And sweep the Demons (31-20, 16-11) did.

Nathan Jones (4-5) picked up his second win in as many weekends, tossing seven strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits to continue a dominant series from Demons starters. Jones did not walk a batter for the second time in three starts and struck out six.

Jones, Ridge Heisler and Jerry Maddox worked a combined 23 innings and allowed just eight hits and two runs. As a whole, Northwestern State pitchers limited Abilene Christian (21-29, 5-22) to a .124 average in earning the Demons' first sweep of the Barbier era.

It was Northwestern State's first sweep since taking three straight from Abilene Christian on the final weekend of the 2016 season. Those three wins capped a 10-game conference winning streak for NSU.

The current edition of the Demons has won four straight conference games and is 7-2 in their past three conference weekends.

"It was a good team win and feels good to finish a weekend," Barbier said. "We're playing well, and it starts on the mound. When you get good, quality starts, it lets you get into the game. If the guy on the other side is pitching well, it keeps you right there. Today, we got on them in the third and fourth innings with a couple of big hits. It starts right there on the mound. If we can put all of it together for the stretch run, we could do something special."

That special moment could come in 10 days when the Demons open Southland Conference Tournament play. Sunday's victory clinched NSU's spot in the eight-team, double-elimination event, which begins May 23 in Sugar Land, Texas, at Constellation Field.

The Demons can take notes of doing something in a special way from Fry, who finished the weekend series with two doubles and two home runs while playing in front of former Demons standout Brandon Morgan.

Fry broke Morgan's career doubles record earlier in the season and is six total bases away from tying his mark in that category.

Fry also is 12 hits away from tying Morgan's career mark of 259, but the senior wasn't the only Demon to do something historic Sunday afternoon.

While Fry's two home runs gave him 30 for his career – tying Chase Lyles for second in NSU history – shortstop Caleb Ricca also pulled even with Lyles in the Demons' record book.

Ricca, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, tied Lyles' single-game stolen base record by swiping four bases in four tries. Ricca leads the Demons with 18 steals, the most by an NSU player since Nick Heath set the single-season record with 35 in 2016.

"He could have more steals," Barbier said. "I've said it about Kwan (Adkins), and I'll say it about Caleb. The way I like to play has probably hindered him from having about 25 on the season. He's done a good job when he's had the green light. He had it all day today, and you could tell he was excited to have it."

The Demons return to action Tuesday night when they open a season-ending, four-game road trip at LSU. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.
