NATCHITOCHES –
David Fry can add another two honors to his growing resume.
After a milestone week that included his first career five-hit game, Fry was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday in a vote by league sports information directors. A couple of hours later, he picked up his third Louisiana Sports Writers Association award of the season, earning Hitter of the Week honors from a panel of statewide sports media members.
While starting games at three different positions, Fry batted .571 (12-for-22) with five doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs as Northwestern State won four of five games, including two of three games against Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference weekend series.
It is the first weekly Southland honor of Fry's career. Fry previously was named the LSWA Hitter of the Month for early March and was the organization's Hitter of the Week on March 26.
The week began with Fry going 5-for-5 with a school single-game record-tying three doubles and a home run in a 21-0 win against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. He followed that with another home run as part of a three-hit, five-run performance in a 34-0 win against Mississippi Valley State.
He tied the school single-game record with three doubles, marking the second time he has equaled the mark.
"He's a special hitter," second-year head coach
Bobby Barbier said. "Five-hit games are hard to come by. You've got to have a lot of good things happen. He's going to go down as one of the best ones to ever play here, and I'm hoping he gets a few more on the way out."
Fry added another home run in the series opener against Houston Baptist, marking the second time this season he has homered in three straight games, a feat he has accomplished three times in his career.
Fry, a Grapevine (Texas) High School product, enters this weekend's series at Incarnate Word ranked in the top 10 in nine different categories in school history: doubles (1
st, 67), total bases (2
nd, 392), RBIs (3
rd, 141), home runs (T-3
rd, 28), at-bats (4
th, 781), hit by pitch (4
th, 37), hits (4
th, 237), runs scored (6
th, 142) and games played (9
th, 203).
His 19 doubles on the season are tied for the sixth-highest total in school single-season history.
