NSU to finally play La. Tech, Grambling doubleheader

RUSTON — Winners of 10 of its last 12 matches, but hoping to rebound from a defeat on Friday, the Northwestern State Lady Demon tennis team breaks away from its league schedule Monday for a thrice-postponed doubleheader against Louisiana Tech and Grambling.

The pair of matches were originally set Feb. 6 in the midst of non-conference play, but inclement weather postponed that action, a second meeting slated for Feb. 14 and a third attempt on March 27.

Posting only one loss in Southland competition, the Lady Demons (11-6 overall) will face Louisiana Tech (7-7) first, at 1 p.m at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.

Just last year, NSU broke a four-season losing streak against the Lady Techsters with a 4-3 victory.

With the overall score at 3-0, Polina Mutel rallied from early deficits in both first and second sets against Nadja Manjon for a straight set 6-4, 7-5 win that clinched the match.

"Louisiana Tech is a pretty solid team," NSU head coach Patric DuBois said. "Whether they've won or lost, you can see that they're very good and very competitive."

NSU will finish its double feature against Grambling with the hope that this non-conference day will be good preparation for three final conference matches.

"Out-of-conference matches allow us the opportunity to even further work on things that we have been implementing in matches along the way," DuBois said.

The Lady Demons have swept each of the three past meetings with the Lady Tigers (5-12), taking 6-0 wins in both 2016 and 2017 and blanking Grambling, 5-0, in 2015.

Senior Polina Ivanova's Friday singles win at Abilene Christian (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) placed her 10th all-time for most singles wins in Lady Demon tennis history with a 51-25 record. To move to into a tie for No. 9, she must post two more victories, and Monday provides this opportunity.

With a 10-3 overall record, sophomore Judit Castillo leads the Lady Demons in singles wins primarily at the No. 5 slot while No. 1 partnership Polina Mutel and Polina Ivanova lead in doubles wins with a 12-2 overall mark.

NSU resumes its conference schedule at home on Saturday against two-time defending Southland champion Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. and Sunday against UIW at 11 a.m. Those are the last two homecourt appearances at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex for the Lady Demons this spring.
