OXFORD, Mississippi-- Junior Ela Iwaniuk and freshman Antonia Blattner of the Northwestern State Lady Demon tennis team each won their singles matches Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Southern Regional, setting up a championship on Monday between the NSU teammates.

Due to weather, the Draw 2 final match that was supposed to be played on Sunday will be held on the campus of Northwestern State Monday at around 2:30.

"I cannot overstate how proud I am of all four of our ladies who competed this weekend at our regional, which is arguably one of the toughest in the U.S.," head coach Patric DuBois said. "All four competed well and played the process and style we ask them to play.

"All four then went out and executed at a high level during all matches."

Blattner took a hard-fought decision over Katie De La Gorza of Southern Mississippi 6-3, 7-5 to join Iwaniuk, who won because of a walkover, in the final.

"It is rare to have teammates meet each other in the final of a tournament of this caliber," DuBois said. "But Antonia and Ela have achieved this. I am proud of the progress both have made this semester and we plan to build on this."

In doubles, the NSU pairing of senior Polina Mutel and freshman Maria Skyba, won their two matches Sunday to claim the doubles consolation bracket crown. They started the day by winning 8-4 over Samford's duo of Elsa Pool and Natalia De Ugarte to advance to the finals. They convincingly defeated Auburn's Lindsay Song and Caroline Turner 8-2 for the title.

After dropping their first doubles match Friday against 2018 NCAA doubles champions Jessica Golovin and Eden Richardson of LSU, Mutel and Skyba bounced back by winning their four consolation matches, with only one match being closer than a four-game margin.

"Winning all matches to take the doubles consolation championship after losing a tough one to the NCAA doubles champions is a glance into what Mutel and Skyba are capable of as a doubles team," DuBois said.
