LAFAYETTE – The Northwestern State tennis team excelled on day two of the ULL Rajun Cajun Invitational, as the Lady Demons won four of six championships in its first action of the fall season.
Kateryna Avram and
Polina Ivanova won matches against South Alabama's Yu Fujioka and Nikola Kohoutova (6-2) to advance, where they defeated host team ULL's Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic (6-3) to win the flight one doubles championships.
The doubles championship efforts continued with
Judit Castillo and
Elzbieta Iwaniuk beating Lamar's Amelie Vossgaetter and Sanja Jolic 6-2, advancing them to the flight three doubles championship, where they defeated the Incarnate Word duo of Jelena Dordan and Alejandra Tamayo 6-1.
The victory parade did not end for Castillo and Iwaniuk as they were both able to win their singles flights.
Castillo faced Southeastern's Ximena Yanez in the number four singles flight 6-2, 6-0. Iwaniuk capped off the number three singles flight with a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of South Alabama's Nikola Kohoutova.
NSU's
Polina Ivanova was not able to cap off her run through the number one singles flight, falling to South Alabama's Maxine Palmen in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Coach
Patric DuBois was pleased with the effort of the squad in its inaugural action.
""By and large, I was very happy with the way the four ladies played in singles and doubles this weekend," DuBois said. "We are working on point plans and strategy that definitely takes a few of them out of their comfort zone, yet they did what we asked this weekend. On top of this, they executed well which led to successful results."
The Lady Demon tennis team hits the court again Oct. 6-8 for the SMU Mustang Invitational.
