LORMAN, Mississippi - In the opening of a four-match week for the Northwestern State volleyball team, the Lady Demons quickly took down Alcorn State 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-12) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Demons (1-3) picked up their first win of the season, handing the youth-laden Braves (0-5) their fifth straight defeat to open the 2017 schedule.
NSU started quickly, building a quick 9-1 lead in the first set on the backs of a defense that forced the Braves into four attack errors and outside hitters Victoria Harris and Reagan Rogers who combined for three kills.
The Lady Demons kept the pressure on Alcorn, extending the lead to 16-3 with three kills from middle blocker Kourtney Seaton.
With the score at 20-9, NSU turned the pressure back on, picking up five consecutive points thanks in part to a pair of kills from outside hitter Alexis Warren and another from setter Kathryn Wristen, closing the set at 25-9.
The second set was much of the same for the Lady Demons, as NSU allowed Alcorn to pick up consecutive points just twice in the set on their way to a 25-11 second set victory.
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Brister showed why she was such a decorated high school player, leading the match with nine kills, six of which came in the second set. Brister, a member of the USA Volleyball High Performance Team, hit .471 on the afternoon.
In the third set, the Lady Demons continued to roll with the momentum, winning 25-12 to close out their first win of 2017.
The Lady Demons will continue on the road as they prepare to play in the Troy Invitational on Friday and Saturday. NSU is scheduled to face Winthrop and Troy on Friday and Jackson State on Saturday.
