MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Two Northwestern State fifth-year seniors, quarterback J.D. Almond and linebacker Peyton Guidry, wrap up their college football careers Friday night in the EAC6 Euro-American Challenge game.
The contest, played since 2012, is designed to provide a showcase for college football seniors and others to an international audience, with dozens of pro football leagues in America and abroad.
Almond and Guidry will play for Team America in the contest, set for 6 p.m. CST at Doug Shaw Stadium.
Guidry (6-0, 235) had a spectacular finish to his Demon career, winning STATS LLC National FCS Defensive Player of the Week honors after the season-ending 38-21 win over Stephen F. Austin. He made a career-best 18 tackles, two in goalline stands, and set up NSU's opening score with an interception on the game's first play.
That also earned him Southland Conference and Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week awards. It was his second national award, with College Sports Madness making him the FCS Defensive Player of the Week after making 14 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, while forcing two fumbles in a win at Houston Baptist, a performance that earned him his first Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Guidry, a Cut Off-South Lafourche product, finished as the Purple Swarm defense's leading tackler with 85 stops, including 9.5 for lost yards and 2.5 sacks, while making two interceptions, forcing two fumbles and recovering one. He was a four-year letterman who made 173 career stops, 20 for lost yards.
Almond (6-0, 208) threw for 1,964 yards and 10 touchdowns in three seasons while starting 11 of 24 games he played for the Demons.
The Haughton product had a 54 percent (157-289-11) completion rate and notably completed 10 straight passes, the fifth-best string in school history, in 2016 at Abilene Christian.
Almond had a career-best 275 yards passing in a 2015 start against Central Arkansas. As a senior, his season high was 256 yards against Southeastern Louisiana. He caught an 18-yard pass against Louisiana Tech.
This fall, he held for the Demons' placement kicks and was flawless on 46 attempts.
Almond was the Jack Clayton Scholarship recipient this season, earning an award given for leadership, scholarship and accomplishment to a senior player. Almond graduated this summer and played his final season as a graduate student.
Saturday, two more Demons, defensive tackle Dannie Harmon and running back Chris Jones, will play in the FCS Scout Bowl in Myrtle Beach.
