NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State volleyball team's regular season and home finale carries extra weight this season.
Senior defensive specialist Kylie Spencer, the Lady Demons lone senior, was a member of the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament Champions Lady Demons, and hopes to cap her career with another conference championship.
"I wish I could keep playing, but at the same time, my body is kind of tired," Spencer laughed. "It's kind of bittersweet. I wish I could have four more years. It went by really fast. We definitely want to win conference. We won it my freshman year, so to win it my senior year would be pretty cool. I think this team can do it."
Spencer has played a key role in serve receive this season, calming the backline when the team has been unable to move the rotation.
"She's meant a lot to us the last two years," third-year head coach
Sean Kiracofe said. "Like I've said all year, we've really transitioned to a ball control and defensive team, and she plays a huge role in that. Last year, we wouldn't have done anything that we did without her. This year, as we've gone through the second half of the conference season, she come in and always settles down serve receive for us.
"She plays great defense out of middle-back, and really makes it easier on (setter) Kat (Wristen) to set balls. We're able to keep rallies alive because of her, and it's just easier to sideout with her in. If we didn't have her, we'd have to change a lot of things and we'd be a different team."
The Lady Demons (14-16, 9-6) will own the tiebreaker over McNeese (19-11, 10-5) and have the potential to take over the fourth seed in the conference tournament with a win Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to the match is free thanks to the support of Red River Mill Credit Union.
NSU previously beat McNeese on the road on Oct. 12, storming back from two sets down to win the tie-breaking fifth set 20-18.
Thursday's sweep against Nicholls saw multiple Lady Demons (14-16, 9-6) climbing individual single-season rankings in the NSU record book.
With a 44-assist match, Wristen locked in the fourth-highest single season total in Lady Demons history. She is now 86 from tying Missy Krause for the No. 3 position.
Outside hitter Reagan Rogers has been on the receiving end of more than one-third of Wristen's assists, putting down 397 kills this season. Her match-high 17 kills against McNeese placed her sixth all-time in single-season history, replacing current assistant coach
Stacey DiFrancesco. Rogers needs nine more kills to move to fifth outright in single-season standings.
Rogers also jumped DiFrancesco for second with 1,262 attempts in a single-season. DiFrancesco set the record for most attempts by a Lady Demon in 2011 – her freshman season – with 1,390.
With a 26-dig performance, libero Channing Burleson took fourth-all time in a single season with 543 digs. She also holds the No. 3 spot with 587 digs in her sophomore campaign.
Middle blocker Madeline Drake, who has put down 21 block assists in the previous four matches, now stands at third in Lady Demons single-season history with 97 on the season. Lady Demons great
Glynna Johnson holds the first and second spots with 137 and 105, respectively.
