NATCHITOCHES – Three Northwestern State conference champions, Jermeka McBride, George Flaviano and Emmanuel Williams, won top Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field awards Wednesday.

McBride was the Female Outstanding Running Events Award winner after sweeping the 100 and 200 meter dash crowns and running a leg on the runner-up 4x100 relay last weekend at the 2016 Southland Outdoor Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Flaviano was voted by league coaches as the Male Newcomer of the Year after capturing the 400 meter hurdles and running a leg on the Demons' winning 4x100 relay squad.

Williams won the Male Outstanding Field Events prize for posting the nation's 16th-best long jump to win his specialty, and taking the runner-up spot in the triple jump.

The Lady Demons matched their best-ever conference meet finish, second, with a school-record 112.3 point total. The Demons finished a strong third in the 12-team men's race with 116 points.

McBride, a senior from The Bahamas, ran the nation's 42nd fastest 100 meters (11.44) this year to win. She set an NSU school record in the 200 with her first-place 23.63 time and was part of a 45.90 clocking for silver in the 4x100 relay.

Flaviano, a mid-year junior college transfer originally from South Sudan, carved nearly a second off his season best with a winning 400 meter hurdles time of 51.21, a mark that is 25th nationally.

Williams soared 25-8 ¼ to capture the long jump last Friday, then covered 50-7 a day later to finish second to his twin brother Aaron in the triple jump. Each one scored 18 points as Aaron Williams took second in the long jump. They are from Duson and Acadiana High School, and each has already received his undergraduate degree from NSU.

The three NSU award winners will be among a large group of Demons and Lady Demons heading to the NCAA East Preliminary Round Championships late this month in Jacksonville, Fla.

They accounted for seven of the 23 podium finishes by NSU entries at the three-day Southland Outdoors.

Along with the medals received on the podium at the meet, the top-three finishers earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first-team honors, the second place finisher earned second-team accolades while third place finishers were honored with third-team awards.
