NATCHITOCHES -- Former Northwestern State football player David Wright did a little bit of everything during his playing days from 1976-79.
Â
Wright, who will be honored Saturday as the Exchange Bank Demon Great of the Game during NSU's 6 p.m. contest against Nicholls, played four different positions in his four seasons.
Â
He played quarterback as a freshman, fullback as a sophomore, defensive end as a junior and linebacker as a senior, when his smashing hit on a Louisiana Tech receiver clinched the Demons' 1979 State Fair Classic triumph.
Â
A St. Mary's High School product who was highly recruited, including offers from LSU and Oklahoma, Wright chose to play where his brother Stuart was, and where their father Ted had played for the unbeaten 1939 Demons.
Â
In his two seasons defensively, he made 155 tackles, including 17 against Stephen F. Austin as a senior. He was voted Defensive Permanent Team Captain in 1979 and was an All-Louisiana selection at a time when NSU was not in a conference.
Â
Wright was inducted in the N-Club Hall of Fame in 1993 and was chosen in 2007 for the Top 100 Demons of All-Time roster selected in the centennial celebration of NSU football.
Â
That year, the successful businessman was inducted in the university's Long Purple Line alumni Hall of Distinction.
Â
A Demon Great of the Game is spotlighted at each NSU home football game with past honorees this season including softball's Ginger Craig and football receiver Al Phillips.
Â
In its first three years, the Demon Great of the Game presented by Exchange Bank and Trust of Natchitoches honored 17 of the most outstanding performers in the 108-year history of NSU athletics. Exchange Bank has been a key supporter of NSU Athletics throughout its long history as the oldest financial institution in Natchitoches.
