NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State sophomore safety Adam Jones won more national recognition Tuesday, sharing the College Football Performance Awards' national FCS Defensive Performer of the Week honor for his remarkable play helping the Demons to upset FBS rival Louisiana Tech 30-27 on Saturday.

Defensive back Donald Mattocks of North Carolina A&T shared the CFPA honor with Jones. Villanova quarterback John Robertson won the CFPA's FCS offensive player of the week award.

Jones was named one of five College Sporting News FBS All-Stars Monday and also voted the Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

A 6-2, 196-pound sophomore from Katy, Texas-Seven Lakes, Jones was second on the Demons' Purple Swarm defense at Tech with six tackles along with making two interceptions, each which helped produce points for NSU.

His third-quarter interception and 17-yard return halted a potential scoring drive by the Bulldogs and jump-started a 54-yard scoring drive by the Demons that closed the margin to 13-10.

His second interception took place with just 52 seconds remaining, on the first offensive play after the Demons tied the game at 27-all with a 29-yard field goal.

Setting up the Demons' offense at midfield, where NSU started a quick drive to produce a game-winning 47-yard Chris Moore field goal, Jones made a diving scoop of a pass that was deflected downfield by senior cornerback Imoan Claiborne.

The Demons (2-2) have an open date this week and begin Southland Conference competition Saturday, Oct. 4 at Southeastern Louisiana. That ends a string of four straight road games before the Oct. 11 homecoming contest at Turpin Stadium against Incarnate Word.
