Islanders rally in ninth, win in extras

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi mounted a furious comeback in the ninth inning and pushed across two runs in the 13th inning to overcome a four-run deficit and win 7-5 over the Northwestern State baseball team Thursday night in Southland Conference action.
 
The Demons (22-15, 10-6 SLC) and Islanders (20-19, 10-6) are in a six-way tie for first place with McNeese State, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston.  The second game of the NSU and Corpus Christi series will be on Friday at 6:30 and the final contest will be a 2 o'clock on Saturday.
 
Cody Stephens' double down the left field line was the big blow in the ninth inning, and it pushed the fourth and fifth runs across for the Islanders to tie it.  His double scored Jordan Lee and Brandon Tierney, who Demon reliever Andrew Adams had two strikes on before he walked and hit with a pitch.
 
Russell Vaughn had a double to score the first run of the ninth, and Frankie Salas drew a bases-loaded walk to score the second run.
 
Northwestern State had runners in scoring position in every inning that followed the top of the ninth, except the 13th frame, and could not get the run across.  Corpus Christi capitalized and two run in its half of the 13th inning.  Stephens and Tyler Ware each had RBI hits to jump up 7-5, and win.
 
NSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the eighth inning.  Three runs came in the fourth and two in the eighth. 
 
Dugas singled up the middle with one out in the fourth frame and advanced to second on a single through the right side from Cort Brinson. Chase Daughdrill singled up the middle and took second base on the throw all while he knocked in Brinson and pushed Brinson to third base.
 
Nathan Lyons singled to center field to score Brinson and Garrett Logan scored Daughdrill on a fielder's choice.
 
Kaufman had an RBI single in the eighth inning to score Daughdrill, who reached no a double down the left field line, and Logan knocked in Nick Heath on a single into right field.
 
Heath pinch ran for Kaufman after he reached second base when Matt Alford walked.
 
Adam Oller started on the mound for NSU and worked six innings.  He gave up seven hits and allowed one run, in the fifth inning, with four strikeouts and no walks.  Joey Parrack relieved him and pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
 
Adams worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on two walks and a hit batter.  Steven Spann pitched 3.1 innings, and held Corpus Christi to no runs in extra frames and gave up three hits.
 
Brandon Smith (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he allowed four hits in the 13th inning and gave up two earned runs.
 
Matt Danton took the hill to start for the Islanders.  He worked 6.2 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks.  Kevin Landgrebe (3-3) earned the win with two shutout innings pitched.
 
Daughdrill led NSU with three hits in six at-bats at the plate.  He scored two runs and added one knocked in.  Dugas, Brinson, Kaufman and Lyons all had two hits on the night.  Alford and Logan each added one.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outhit the Demons 17-13, but were tied until the final inning.  Each team had an error, but neither caused a run.
