Cowboys rally in the ninth, even the series

Box Score LAKE CHARLES – McNeese State outscored the Demons 6-2 in the final two innings to overcome a three-run deficit held by the Northwestern State baseball team to grab a 11-10 win over the Demons Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.
 
The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  The game will be broadcast on 100.7 KZBL-FM in Natchitoches and free of charge on NSUDemons.com.
 
Northwestern State (20-14, 9-5 SLC) led 10-8 at the start of the ninth inning, but a three-run rally with only one out gave the Cowboys (20-13, 10-4) the win. Reed Gordy led off the inning with a full-count walk, and scored in the next at-bat on a double and error in right field from Billy Sommers.
 
Lucas Quary, who reached on after being hit by a pitch, tied the game on a wild pitch, and Sam Peterson won the game on a on a hit-by-pitch to Jackson Gooch with the bases loaded.  Peterson reached on a bunt single to the pitcher with nobody covering the first base bag.
 
Northwestern State scored two runs in the eighth inning to make the score 10-5 in the middle of the eighth, but the Cowboys answered that with three in the bottom of the eighth to cut it back to 10-8.
 
Chase Daughdrill led the Demons at the plate with two-run home runs in back-to-back innings, and added a fifth run batted in with a double in the eighth inning. He finished the day with three hits in five at-bats with three runs scored
 
It was the first two home runs of his career as a Demon, and the fifth and sixth long balls for Northwestern State.
 
Caleb Dugas reached on an error to lead off the fourth inning, and two batters later Daughdrill put one between the left field wall and scoreboard to give NSU its first hit and runs of the game. 
 
Two more runs were scored in that inning.  The first was on a sacrifice fly from C.J. Webster to score Nathan Lyons, who reached on a single, and the second was on a double that one-hopped the wall to score Kaufman.
 
His homer in the fifth inning hit the top of the McNeese scoreboard and scored Dugas again.  The first of that inning was scored by Bret Underwood who advanced on a sacrifice fly from Brinson.
 
Josh Oller started the game and pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks.  Joey Parrack relieved him with 1.2 innings of work and allowed only one walk.
 
Andrew Adams worked one inning and gave up four runs on four hits and a walk, and Steven Spann (7-4) was tagged with the loss on 1.1 innings.  Spann allowed three runs on three hits and two walks.
 
Nathan Lyons had three hits in four at-bats and scored two runs and had one RBI. Regan Kaufman and Joel Atkinson each had two base knocks.  Atkinson had one run batted in and Kaufman had one scored.  Underwood, Dugas, and Webster added a hit, and Dugas had two RBIs on the night.
 
Steven O'Bryant (2-3) took the win on one inning pitched and one hit allowed.  Michael Clemens started the game for McNeese and worked 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks.
 
Every time the Demons scored, McNeese State answered until they took the game in the ninth inning when Northwestern State did not push runs across. 
 
The Demons will host a midweek game against Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday night and a conference series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  The Corpus series starts on Thursday at 6:30.
