NEW ORLEANS – Inching closer to the Southland Conference Tournament, the Northwestern State women's basketball team will finish out its five-game road swing and road schedule at New Orleans on Saturday at 4:00 in the Lake Front Arena.
NSU (15-12, 8-7 Southland Conference) sits in a tie for sixth place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and is just one game out of fourth place. The first and second seeds get a double-bye in the tournament and the third tournament and fourth seeds are awarded a single-bye in the eight-team event.
With the standing so congested, the Lady Demons have not clinched a bid to the tourney. The 10
th and 11
th place teams (Houston Baptist and Oral Roberts) are just two games behind the fourth and fifth place teams (McNeese State and Nicholls).
New Orleans has a 0-26 record overall and 0-15 record in conference.
"We're going face a team that hasn't won yet, and that is always dangerous because at this point every team is hungry for a win. I don't expect that bunch to be any different on Saturday," said co-head coach
Brooke Stoehr. "We prepared just like we did for Thursday's game at Southeastern and we're ready to go."
The Lady Demons traveled to Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday and put together a complete, team win to down the Lady Lions 73-58. NSU, who at one point held a 25-point lead, finished with 24 assists in the game and kept SLU to a season-low 15 points in the first half.
Keisha Lee led the way in that game with 21 points. She is tied with
Trudy Armstead for the team's leader in scoring average with 14.2 points per game.
Janelle Perez follows with 10.4 points per contest.
Armstead also leads NSU in rebounds and averages 6.1 boards per game. Freshman
Kourtney Pennywell follows her with 5.8 rebounds a contest.
The Lady Demons average and allow opponents to average 64 points per game. They shoot at a 41 percent clip from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range.
UNO averages 48 points a game and allows it opponents to score 81 points. The Privateers shoot 30 percent from the floor and 24 percent behind the 3-point line. They are led in scoring by Octavia Wilson who scores 8.4 points followed by Danielle Davis who averages 8.1 points a contest.
After New Orleans, the Lady Demons will return home to play the final two games of its regular season in Prather Coliseum. Central Arkansas will be in Natchitoches on March 6 and Oral Roberts will appear on March 8.
