SHREVEPORT – Northwestern State president-elect Dr. Jim Henderson now really is the Demons' No. 1 man.

Thursday during the weekly Demon Quarterback Club Luncheon at Superior's Steakhouse in Shreveport, NSU football coach Jay Thomas presented Henderson with a framed No. 1 Demon jersey, complete with "Henderson" in block letters above the numeral.

"I may have some eligibility left," cracked Henderson, whose father, Clem Henderson, played college football at Louisiana Tech in the 1940s, sandwiched around service in the Pacific during World War II.

Coach Thomas asked the incoming president about his shoe size.

"It's not the cleats I'm worried about," Henderson replied, to the delight of the audience in the packed banquet room. "It's the size of the belt."

Henderson, selected last month to succeed the retiring Dr. Randy Webb as president on Jan. 1, is a 1994 Northwestern State graduate. He is wrapping up a highly-successful tenure as chancellor at Bossier Parish Community College.

"It's really a privilege to be the person presenting this to Dr. Henderson," said Thomas, who guided the Demons to a victory at Louisiana Tech Sept. 20, just four days before Henderson was named NSU's president-elect.

"This is a great honor," said Henderson, who said he was looking forward to visiting the NSU campus Saturday and supporting the Demons as they take on their oldest annual rivals, the McNeese State Cowboys, in a 6 p.m. game at Turpin Stadium.
