NATCHITOCHES— Jeffery Enloe's 11-inning pitching performance coupled with a run in the second and 11th innings gave Central Arkansas a 2-1 win over the Northwestern State baseball team Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.
The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1 o'clock in Brown-Stroud Field.
Enloe (6-1) pitched every inning for the Bears (22-8, 3-5 SLC) and allowed the lone run (unearned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. The Demons dropped to 10-22 overall and 1-7 in Southland Conference play.
Michael Marietta reached on hit-by-pitch in the second inning and advanced to second base on a steal. He reached third and scored on two separate wild pitches from
Ashton Sivigliano, who got the starting nod for NSU.
The go-ahead run came on a single to right field from Brent Marchal that scored Marietta from second base. Marietta reached leadoff single to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Townsend.
The Demons forced the game into extra innings after
Will Watson hit a one-out single through the left side in the eighth to score
Edwin Gomez from third base. Gomez reached on a single through the right side, took second on a stolen base, and got to third on an error by the catcher in the throw to second.
Steven Spann (2-2) was tagged with the loss after he allowed the go-head run in the final frame. He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up two hits, three walks, and struck out three.
Cody Butler came in the game in the third inning and shut down the Bears with 6.1 innings pitched and four hits allowed.
The top two batters in the Demon lineup (Gomez and Watson) combined for a five-for-nine day at the plate with a score and run batted in. The rest of the lineup combined for two hits in 27 at-bats.
For UCA, both Marchal and Marietta each had two of the team's six hits.
The Demons stranded six runners on base while the Bears left 13 runners on a bag.
The Demons will remain at home on Wednesday when they take on Louisiana-Lafayette at 6:30.
