Despite the six walks, Smith stranded 10 of the 11 base runners he allowed, and only one made it to third base.
Joey Parrack (0-7) got the start for NSU and took the loss. He pitched four innings and allowed six runs on five hits and one walk.
The Demons scored their first run in the sixth inning when
Cort Brinson scored from second base when Zach Costa reached on a fielder's choice followed by an error from shortstop Carter Burgess.
The final two runs came in the seventh inning that started off with a leadoff walk to
Matt Burns. He scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field from
Todd Wallace.
Edwin Gomez, who reached on a single through the left side, scored from third base when
Cort Brinson hit into a fielder's choice.
The Demons left 12 runners on base, including nine in scoring position.
Northwestern State will start a two-game, midweek set with Southern University on Tuesday at 6:00. Tuesday's game will be televised on Cox Sports, and Wednesday's game (3:00) will be on 100.7 KZBL in Natchitoches.
