Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Sam Street pitched a complete game and allowed only one run to lead Texas-Pan American past Northwestern State 4-1 Friday night in non-conference action.
Street (2-0) allowed six hits, two walks, one unearned run, and struck out five on the way to his first complete game of the season.
Joey Parrack (0-1) took the loss for NSU (3-2) on four innings pitched, four hits, and two earned runs, and struck out seven.
“He threw exactly what reports said he would,” said head coach
Lane Burroughs. “He's just a three-quarter guy that throws 80-83 mph with a slider.
“It's not frustrating losing, just frustrating getting out the same way over and over again and nobody making adjustments,” said Burroughs.
The Demon pitching staff as a whole struck out UTPA (2-3) 13 times. Steven Span pitched three innings and with four strikeouts, and
Nick Helmstetter pitched two innings with two punch outs.
The Broncs jumped up 2-0 in the third inning when Andy Fortuna led off the innings with a single to center field. He stole second followed by a walk for Shane Klemcke. Both scored on a triple by Alex Howe.
Howe was the game leader in runs batted in after he knocked in Riley Goulding in the ninth inning.
NSU was led at the plate by senior
Will Watson who was 2-for-3 and
Matt Baca who had the lone RBI when he knocked in
Nick Purdy in the seventh.
Northwestern State had a chance to tie it up in the ninth with Watson on second and
Nick Purdy on first with two out.
Todd Wallace battled, but eventually grounded out to third base.
“I'm proud of them for having great at-bats late, but we wanted those at-bats in the first through eighth innings,” said Burroughs.
The two teams will face-off again Saturday at 4 o'clock. Fans that attend the women's basketball game at noon can show their ticket and get a reduced rate to game.
