NATCHITOCHES – Two Cougar Classic flight championships, by freshman Kateryna Piatakova in singles and the doubles tandem of Piatakova and junior standout Polina Konop, and a singles final appearance by freshman Aliona Ladutska provided a fitting high point this past weekend for the completion of a successful fall season by Northwestern State's women's tennis team.

Three nationally-ranked teams were among the dozen who had players competing at the tournament hosted by the University of Houston. It wrapped up Sunday. NSU sent half its eight-woman roster to the competition.

"I felt we had another good weekend to finish our fall season very well at Houston," said DuBois. "While Polina was winless in singles, she played very well in all three matches, losing against nationally ranked players (two three-setters). Nataly Krutova improved during the tournament and finished with two victories.

"I was very pleased with first-year players Aliona Ladutska and Kateryna Piatakova," he said. "Kate played very well, winning her flight, and Aliona was in the final but we sat her out as a precaution with lingering injury issues.

"Polina and Kate won their doubles flight (defeating the same UH team in the final that defeated Tatiana Larina and Amy Williams in Natchitoches three weeks ago), so we had very good success in a tournament with some high caliber competition including several Southland Conference and regional teams," said DuBois.

"We had a solid fall as we gained in experience and most importantly, we are much stronger and in better shape with the help of coach Evan Coachman in the weight room. I believe we are very prepared for the all-important spring season and the pursuit of a Southland Conference championship and another NCAA Tournament appearance," said DuBois.
The Lady Demons made their second NCAA Tournament in the past four years last spring and return five players from that squad.
