Lady Demons fall to SLC No. 1 UCA in intense match Tuesday evening

11/12/2013 10:17:00 PM

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Double-digit kills from four different members of Southland Conference first place Central Arkansas allowed the Sugar Bears to claim a 3-1 (19-25, 34-32, 28-30, 17-25) victory over the Northwestern State volleyball team Tuesday night in a record-breaking 815 attendance rate in Prather Coliseum.

"That was really good volleyball on display for both sides, and we've always had a lot of respect for Central Arkansas," said fourth year co-head coach Hugh Hernesman. "For us to give them everything they could handle in this match, it goes to show how far this program has come."

Despite the loss, the Lady Demons (18-11 overall, 14-3 SLC) are still boasting the program's best record to date as UCA (24-3, 17-0) claims the Southland regular season championship crown and a No. 1 overall seed heading into next weekend's conference tournament. NSU will round out the Southland season on Saturday at league-rival Stephen F. Austin, slated to begin at one o'clock in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Massive numbers in the second and third sets made the game look entirely different than the scores reflected in games one and three. The Sugar Bears got off to an early start in set one with a 4-1 lead and maintained control the entire time, holding the Lady Demons at an arm's length.

The scoreboard staggered in set two until the tie at 20-all. The scores would reflect on another at every single point throughout the remainder of the set until the 34-32 final, with the Lady Demons coming out on top and evening the score heading into the break.

The battle continued in set three as neither team was able to pull away with more than a three-point lead. The score evened 14 different times throughout the game until an attack error from NSU's Vanessa Coleman and a kill from UCA's Jessica Nagy sealed the win for the Sugar Bears.

UCA took the points and ran with them in game four, building a game-high seven point lead at 18-11. NSU was able to tack on six more before UCA claimed their 17th straight win with a 25-17 mark.

Vanessa Coleman recorded 14 kills and a .367 attack percentage to lead the Lady Demons, followed by Stacey DiFrancesco and Mackenzie Neely with 10 kills apiece. DiFrancesco also dug up nine UCA attacks, while Neely put up five total blocks.

"Vanessa showed up in a big way," said Hernesman. "She did a great job at finding space and transitioning, and Stacey is like the glue for us - she was very steady and passed really well."

Glynna Johnson controlled the middle with eight blocks, noting the second time in a row after Saturday's same performance in the middle from the 6'3 sophomore. Libero Keelie Arneson noted a stellar performance with 30 digs, her fourth 30+ dig performance this season.

"Keelie played the same way she did the last time we saw them; she was so focused and her effort was incredible," said Hernesman. "She passed it, defended it and led our back court so we're really impressed with her."

Setters Natalie Jaeger and Emily Johnson dished out 24 and 21 assists, respectively, and dug up seven attacks each.

Saturday rounds out the 2013 regular season and will give Northwestern State a few days to prepare before heading to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Southland Conference Tournament.
