NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State swept the cross-country Southland Conference Athlete of the Week awards when Sarah Emory and Mitch Landry were named athletes of the week for their performance at the Louisiana Monroe Warhawk Invitational last Friday.

Emory, a senior for the Lady Demons, finished first overall in the women's 5,000 meter competition with a time of 20:36.

“Sarah is the most dedicated runner on the team,” said coach Adam Malloy. “She doesn't necessarily have the most natural talent, she simply out works the others. She had definitely earned this honor.”

Landry, a freshman from Doyline, La., placed fourth in the overall men's competition with an 8,000 meter time of 28:38.

“Mitch competed very well at ULM,” said Malloy. “He didn't get wrapped up the race going on around him and stayed focused, which is more valuable at this point than running to win.”

This is the first SLC Athlete of the Week honor for both Emory and Landry.

“I think both Sarah and Mitch will be great leaders this season,” said Malloy.

Emory, Landry and the NSU cross country teams compete again this Saturday in the Louisiana Tech Mook 4 Invitational.
