Box Score NEW ORLEANS- The Northwestern State women's basketball team squeaked by New Orleans 53-52 Friday night and gave co-head coaches Brooke and
Scott Stoehr the first win of their careers.
A last second shot by UNO's Keri Thomas missed to give Northwestern State (1-0) the first win of the 2012-13 campaign and dropped New Orleans to 0-1.
The Lady Demons were down 44-41 with 7:43 left to play when they went on a 10-1 run to take the lead at 51-45 with less than two minutes to play. UNO made a 7-2 run to cut it to a 53-52 NSU lead with with 37 seconds to play.
Jasmine Upchurch put a shot with 14 seconds that missed and then got the rebound before a turnover at the nine-second mark which lead to Thomas' shot at the buzzer.
Northwestern State was led by newcomer Markeshia Johnson with 13 points and sophomore
Jasmine Bradley with 12 points and eight rebounds in her return to the court after missing most of last season with a knee injury.
“We did a great job of getting Markeshia in position to get the ball and do something with it,” said Stoehr. “She was very aggressive in attacking the rim and getting to the foul line.
“Jasmine (Bradley) did a great job on the boards tonight,” she said. “She had six offensive rebounds which could have been the game.”
The Lady Demons forced the Lady Privateers into 22 turnovers and had 15 steals; freshman Janelle Perez, senior Upchruch, and Bradley each had three steals.
The Lady Demons turned the ball over only 14 times, and nine of those came in the first half.
“I felt the turnovers were key to the game,” said
Brooke Stoehr. “We valued the ball and made some adjustments at halftime and that really showed in the second half.”
Offensively, the Lady Demons connected on 31 percent from the field (19-60) and hit one three-pointer in the game.
UNO hit nearly 42 percent of their shots (20-48) and drained six three-pointers on the night.
NSU won on the boards with the Lady Demons bring down 44 rebounds (18 offensive, 26 defensive) to the Lady Privateers 36.
Arianne Ausmer and Upchurch were the individual leaders each with nine.
The Lady Demons return to action on Monday when they open the home slate against Alcorn State with tip-off slated for 7 o'clock.
