4 Lady Demons top Academic All-SLC tennis

NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State led all 12 league member institutions with four selections on the 12-member 2011 Southland Conference All-Academic Women's Tennis Team announced Wednesday by the league office.

Sophomore Andrea Nedorostova and senior Martina Rubesova received first-team selections while seniors Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz made the second team in voting by SLC head coaches, sports information personnel and academic advisors. Lange and Schulz were repeat selections, earning slots on the all-academic team last season when the Lady Demons won the Southland regular season and tournament championships.

Nedorostova, a native of Brno, Czech Republic, leads the Lady Demons with a 3.91 grade point average as a communications major while Schulz, from Ballinger, Germany, finished with a  3.89 GPA in hospitality and tourism management. Lange, a native of Emmingen, Germany, graduated with a 3.78 GPA in business administration while Rubesova, from Ustinad Laben, Czech Republic, earned her degree with a 3.71 in business administration.

They helped the Lady Demons go 18-6 overall, and 8-3 in the  SLC regular season. NSU reached the Southland tournament championship final, falling 4-2 to Texas-Arlington, a year after sweeping the Southland regular season and tourney crowns. The Lady Demons were 39-8 in the last two seasons.

Nedorostova earned first-team All-Southland honors at No. 2 doubles for the second straight year. She was 19-4 in singles, including 8-3 at No. 5 in Southland play. Her 20-3 mark in doubles included a perfect 11-0 in Southland regular-season matches. Nedorostova and Rubesova, her doubles partner, were a perfect 28-0 overall in two seasons against Southland foes, including conference tournament play.

Rubesova was a magna cum laude graduate this month, graduating ahead of her class, with a season of eligibility remaining.  First-team All-Southland at No. 2 doubles, she was also second-team All-Southland at No. 3 singles. Rubesova posted a 19-3 record in singles at No. 3, including 9-2 in Southland matches, and had the 20-3 mark in doubles, 11-0 in Southland regular-season matches.

Schulz was also a magna cum laude graduate three weeks ago. Second-team All-Southland Conference at No. 3 doubles, she had an overall 17-5 record, including 10-0 in Southland play, 8-0 with Lange, her regular partner.  Schulz was 14-7 overall in singles, 8-3 (all at No. 4) in conference play. She became NSU's career doubles victory leader with 67, breaking a 20-year-old record  and wound up second all-time in NSU history in singles wins (65, two shy of the record).

Lange was another magna cum laude graduate this month. Second-team All-Southland at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, earning her third and fourth All-Southland recognitions, the team captain finished her career second all-time in school history with 65 doubles wins including a 16-7 overall record this year. She is sixth in school history in career singles wins (52, including a 12-8 record this year, mostly at No. 6. Lange was 7-2 in Southland singles play while fighting injuries this spring.
