Lady Demons fall 84-68 to ULM

Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Jasmine Upchurch had career-highs with 20 points and 16 rebounds and Jordi James added 23 points for Northwestern State, but Louisiana-Monroe got 25 points and 10 boards from Larrie Williams and outrebounded the Lady Demons by a 71-40 and take down NSU 84-68 in women's basketball action on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The loss was the third straight suffered by NSU as it fell to 3-8 on the season.  ULM (2-11) won for just the second time this year and picked up its sixth straight victory over Northwestern State.
 
Along with James and Upchurch's double-figure scoring, Ronikka Drake added 11 points.
 
NSU led by as much as nine points at 33-24 with 3:38 to play in the first half after going on a 15-5 run from the 6:18 mark.  But the Warhawks put together a 13-1 run to close out the half to take a 37-34 lead into the lockerroom.
 
The Warhawks opened the second half on a 6-0 run to go up 43-34 with 17:11 to play.  After James knocked down a trey to cut the gap to 49-41 with 14:22 to go, ULM rolled off eight straight points to take a 57-41 lead.
 
NSU kept fighting back and got back-to-back scores from Arianne Ausmer and Drake to cut the deficit to 57-45 with 10:37 to play and then got it to within 11 points a couple of times, the last being at 64-53 with 7:43 to play after a James layup.
 
From that point, ULM went on a 27-15 run over the next six minutes to take an 84-60 lead before NSU closed the game out on an 8-0 run.
 
NSU made just 35.7 percent of its shots from the field for the game after hitting 25 of 70 but hit 7 of 20 from 3-point range.  The Lady Demons were dismal at the free throw line after connecting on just 11 of 25 for 44 percent.
 
ULM connected on 32 of 84 for 38.1 percent from the field, including 4 of 13 for 30.8 percent from long range.  The Warhawks also knocked down 16 of 23 for 69.6 percent from the free thrown line.
 
In addition to Williams' numbers, Alexar Tugler added 18 points for the Warhawks while Elizabeth Torres scored 12 and Jasmine Shaw had 10.
