Late run drops Lady Demons 70-60

Box Score HAMMOND – Alcorn State strung together a 15-3 run over the final 5:13 to beat Northwestern State 70-60 on the final day of the Southeastern Louisiana Women's Basketball Classic.
 
The loss was the second straight suffered by NSU (3-7) while Alcorn State, who entered the classic winless at 0-7, won its second straight to run its record to 2-7 on the year.
 
The Lady Demon got nice games from Jasmine Upchurch and Trudy Armstead.  Armstead led the team with 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Upchurch corralled a double-double after scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds.
 
Ronikka Drake added 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range.
 
Kiara Ruffin paced ASU with 19 points, including a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line.  Alcorn outscored the Lady Demons from the charity stripe by a 21-7 margin.
 
NSU also turned the ball over 29 times that led to 22 points for the Lady Braves.
 
Northwestern stormed out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and led 22-10 after a jumper by Armstead with 9:50 to play in the first half.  Alcorn then scored nine of the next 11 points to cut the gap to 24-19 with 5:09 to play and after trailing 27-19, ended the half on a 13-4 run to take a 32-31 lead at the break.
 
The Lady Demons recaptured the lead early in the second half but fell behind 48-41 with 12:12 to play.
 
Drake and Meredith Graf followed with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the gap to 48-47, then after trailing 51-50, Jordi James, who finished with nine points and eight rebounds, completed a traditional 3-point play to put the Lady Demons up 52-51 with 9:16 to play.
 
Upchurch then knocked down a jumper and James sank one of two free throws to give NSU a 55-51 lead with 6:18 to go before Alcorn mounted its run to end the game.
 
The Lady Demons will return to action on Wednesday when they host Louisiana-Monroe at noon in Prather Coliseum.
