NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State head baseball coach Jon Paul Davis has announced the signing of six players – four pitchers, a catcher, and an outfielder – in the early signing period.
Inking letters of intent were right-handed pitchers Zach Krebs, Jarrod Jameson, Robert Baker, Ricky Eusebio, catcher Garrett Logan, and outfielder Edwin Vasquez.
“Overall, this is a very good start to this year's signing class,” said Davis. “(Assistant coaches) Jeff (McCannon) and Andy (Morgan) have done a great job of evaluating and recruiting in this early signing period.”
Krebs is a big 6-5, 225-pound righty from Sheppard AFV, Texas and Hill College.
Said Davis: "Zach is big right-handed arm that throws a very heavy sinker in the 88-90 mph range and a hard slider. He is a guy that we feel could be a dominate pitcher for us in the Southland Conference, either as a starter or at the back end of a game out of the pen. He should be a major contributor for us is 2013."
Jameson is another big righty, standing 6-4 and weighing 200 pounds from Oklahoma City and Pratt College.
Said Davis: "Jarrod is another physical right-handed pitcher that has the tools necessary to be a weekend starter for us. He throws in the upper 80's to low 90's right now and his velocity and overall stuff should continue to improve as he continues to add size and strength to his frame. We feel that he has the ability to develop into a Friday night guy for the Demons."
Baker is a 6-2, 190 pound righty from Garland, Texas and a member of the Cisco College baseball squad.
Said Davis: "Robert is another very good junior college arm that we feel has a chance to be dominant for Northwestern. Robert has good arm strength, consistently in the 89-92 range, but has been up to 93-94. We feel that Robert's velocity and overall stuff will only continue to get better. He is a true competitor that likes the ball in tough situations."
The final right-handed pitcher is Eusebio, a 6-3, 200 pounder from the Bronx, NY and Odessa College.
Said Davis: "Ricky has the stuff to be a very good arm for us. He has made great strides since high school and we think he will continue to develop into a true power arm and a bona fide weekend guy for us. Ricky has good stuff and good velocity in the 88-92 mph range. We are excited to have Ricky become an NSU Demon."
Logan is a 5-9, 175 catcher from Lake Charles and Blinn College.
Said Davis: "Garrett is a polished catch and throw receiver that will give us quality innings behind the plate. He has good feet, soft hands, and a quick, strong, and accurate throwing arm. He has the ability to handle a good pitching staff and should have an immediate impact for us."
Vasquez is a 6-2, 190 pound outfielder from Santiago, Dominican Republic and Odessa College.
Said Davis: "Edwin is an extremely athletic outfielder that plays with high energy every time he steps on the field. He plays the game the right way. He is very athletic and runs well and throws very well from the outfield. Offensively, he has the ability to develop into a very good hitter for us, especially as he continues to develop physically. We are very excited to Edwin join Demon baseball for the 2013 Season."
“Each of these guys have dynamic physical abilities on the field that will address immediate needs for us for the 2013 season. More importantly, each of these young men are quality individuals and good students. We look forward to each of them arriving on campus next fall."
