NATCHITOCHES -- Twenty major league baseball scouts and personnel staffers representing 18 different organizations were closely watching Friday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field as Northwestern State staged an intersquad game during fall practice.
Radar guns popped up at different times as scouts evaluated NSU pitchers. Reliever
Mason Melotakis was clearly the focal point as the junior left-hander took the mound for two innings.
Melotakis had a breakout performance in relief last April 12, striking out 10 LSU hitters at Alex Box Stadium in a dominating showing.
Right-hander
Joe Scanio was among other NSU players getting a good look Friday from the scouts, who are expected back next month as the Demons will be wrapping up fall drills.
Saturday, the attention will turn to the big hitters as the NSU program hosts its annual Home Run Derby on Homecoming Saturday. The competition will begin at 2 Saturday afternoon with free admission to all.
