BATON ROUGE - Athletes from LSU and Northwestern State earned top special honors awarded on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Track and Field team.

The team is chosen by a list of the three top times or distances in the major outdoor events, then track and field Sports Information Directors vote on the special awards for top athletes and coaches of the year. NSU had seven athletes earn All-Louisiana honors.

LSU sprinter Barrett Nugent was named the men's track athlete of the year, while Tiger Walter Henning was the choice for men's field athlete. On the women's side, LSU's LaTavis Thomas was the top track athlete and Northwestern throws specialist Trecey Rew was named the women's field athlete of the year.

The Demons' sprint star Justin Walker was the men's freshman of the year, while Takeia Pinckney of LSU was the women's freshman of the year. Lady Tiger Samia Stokes was the Newcomer of the Year for non-freshman.

Northwestern's Rew was an All-American in the shot put and an NCAA national championship qualifier in the discus. The Garland, Texas junior won the NCAA East preliminary round title in the discus with a school record 179-0 mark. Her school record 54-11 ¼ shot put  and her discus mark top the state rankings.

Her shot put nationally was sixth best and discus length was 10th best in the country. She was also chosen the Southland Conference Field Event Athlete of the Year.

Freshman Walker led the state in the 200 meter time with a school-record 20.49 time (breaking Joe Delaney's 29-year old record) in winning the Southland Conference title. He was second in the state with a school-record tying 10.13 100 meter time. The Slidell native also ran the second leg on the Demons 4 X 100 relay as he was voted SLC Male Freshman Athlete of the Year.

His times, in both sprints, ranked sixth-best nationally.

NSU had five other athletes earn All-Louisiana honors. Michael Batts, Kendal Taylor, Jamie Emery and Michael Green ran the state's second-fastest 4x400 meter relay time, 3:07.06. Freshman high jumper Joshua Commiato had the state's second-best high jump clearance, 6-10 1/4.

LSU Coach Dennis Shaver was chosen the men's coach of the year, while Louisiana Tech mentor Gary Stanley was chosen women's coach.

Nugent, a sophomore from Maurice finished the outdoor season as the NCAA runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with his school record 13.49 performance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The time ranked as the number three performance by a collegian during the 2010 season. He also earned All-American honors as a member of LSU's 4 x 100 relay that finished in third place at the NCAA meet.

Henning, a junior from Kings Park, N.Y., won every hammer throw competition he entered during 2010. That included the 2010 NCAA Championship as he finished No. 2 nationally in the hammer throw on the NCAA performance list. He became the first collegiate athlete to sweep NCAA titles in the indoor weight throw and the outdoor hammer throw since 2006. He had a personal best of 239-5 in the hammer.

In earning Coach of the Year honors for the men, Shaver led his team to a fourth-place finish indoors and a sixth place outdoor finish. The Tigers took second place at the SEC Outdoor meet as LSU athletes won two NCAA individual titles, six SEC individual titles, 18 All-American selections and 18 All-SEC selections.

On the women's side, Thomas finished her senior year for the Lady Tigers with four All-American and two SEC citations in 2010. She was the NCAA's No. 2-ranked performer during the outdoor season with a seasonal-best time of 2:01.40 in the 800 meters, finishing third in the NCAA 800-meter final. She also anchored the Lady Tigers to a third in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the NCAAs.

Pinckney in her first collegiate season earned three All-American citations in her first year out of Atlanta, Ga. She had personal bests of 11.6 in the 100 and 23.32 in the 200 meters and also ran the third leg on LSU's 4 x 100 relay team that was national runner-up at the NCAA Outdoors. She finished fourth in the NCAA 100 meter final and was selected the SEC Women's Outdoor Freshman Runner of the Year.

A transfer from Mesa Community College for her sophomore season, Stokes became the first Lady Tiger since 1994 to be crowned SEC discus champion with her mark of 168-5 at the conference meet. Had a season best of 177-11 at the NCAA East preliminary round and finishing No. 10 in the NCAA in the discus.

Stanley adds to state women's coach of the year, the 2010 indoor and outdoor WAC Coach of the Year honors. The Lady Techsters won the WAC indoor and outdoor titles in 2010, its sixth consecutive outdoor title. Tech has now won the conference championship in 11 of the last 12 indoor and outdoor conference meets.

The Louisiana best list was based on the performance lists as published by the NCAA and performances in the NCAA Preliminary and Championship Rounds.
