Only H. Lee Prather, basketball coach for 36 seasons, served longer as  a head coach at Northwestern than Johnson … won eight Southland Coach of the Year awards, and two more in the Gulf Star Conference … his competitors won 51 Southland Indoor event championships, 83 Southland Outdoor events, and a combined eight team championships indoors and outdoors … coached 57 All-Americans, nearly 100 NCAA Championship qualifiers, NCAA Indoor 1990 high jump champion Brian Brown, and USA Olympic triple jumpers LaMark Carter and Kenta Bell … has remained active since his retirement as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach for the Demon basketball team … inducted in the Southland Conference Hall of Honor in 2017 … the Southland’s Outdoor men’s coach of the year award is named in his honor … in 2011, became the nation’s only active head coach to have a home meet carrying his name, the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational.
